Clinical Skills exam

I had my clinical skills exams almost two weeks ago now. For the clinical skills exam I was assigned a standardized patient. I had to perform a medical interview and take a complete history from this patient. After I completed I had to also take some vital signs from this patients. We were only required to take Blood pressure and pulse. I passes my exam which was a relief as I was pretty nervous going into it not knowing what case I would get since some are more difficult to obtain the necessary information from the patient. Overall I feel I did well. I may have missed a few points to ask the patients but its all off the top of my head and there are a lot of possible questions to ask. The interview is some what dynamic as the questions I had to ask we altered depending on the previous answers I would receive from the patients. A primary inquiry could lead to secondary, tertiary, etc. Lectures ended this past Friday. Now I have two weeks to prepare for my final exams. These exams are much larger then the first three and worth 40% of the final grade. I feel I would be prepared after just one week of studying. 17 more days and I will be a quarter of the way done on this rock. Until next time...

A lot of it may not make sense but I am able to relate to every single picture. It is my source of entertainment on a study break.

beach day

Since Monday is labour day here in Antigua I do not have classes so we were granted a 3 day weekend. this being said a group of the people in my apartment complex hoped in a cab and ventured to the beach for the day. Yes i do live on the beach but our beach is very small. We went to a large beach where we were able to play some volleyball and enjoy some new scenery. The weather was not the greatest as it was cloudy all day with brief periods of rain. It was been cloudy and rainy here for the past 2-3 days now. they say the rain season is about to begin. Rain here is not like rain at home it makes it hotter and more humid instead of cooling things down.
After spending the day at the beach a group of us went to see the movie The Avengers. This was my first experience at the local cinema which turned out to be really nice. I almost forgot I was in Antigua. It was surprisingly very cheap. My ticket, popcorn, soda, and m&ms were around $11USD all together. I enjoyed the movie as well. It was nice to get out of my rut of a routine and do something new and different. I can see that being a normal escape for me in the future.
Just hammering along with my studies this next exam is going to be extremely difficult as we are getting into all of the metabolic pathways in biochemistry. I am trying to keep up and work ahead so i am not to pressure in the home stretch. Just a few more weeks to go and I will be 25% done on this rock!!
Until next time...

Sample questions

Thought some people might be interesting in seeing what kind of questions I am seeing on my exams. The questions below were taken from a practice exam given to us. They are for Human Structure.

A 24-year-old tall, thin man complains of sudden unilateral pleuritic chest pain and shortness of breath after playing a game of basketball. Being suspicious of a spontaneous pneumothorax, an x-ray film is made. which confirms the
suspicion. A chest tube is placed. Which of the following is a likely physical finding before chest tube placement?
A. Bilateral chest expansion
B. Bronchial breath sounds
C. Hyper resonance on percussion

D. Increased tactile fremitus
E. Tracheal deviation away from the affected lung

A 6-hour-old baby boy who was born full-term and without complications now presents with cyanosis and dyspnea. Physical examination reveals absent breath sounds on the left with bowel sounds present in the left hemithorax.
Heart sounds are distant on the left but heard well on the right An x-ray film of the chest confirms the presence of bowel loops in the chest These findings can all be explained by failed development of a single part of a specific
structure. Which of the following is the most likely origin of the part of this structure that has failed to develop properly?
A.
Bulbus cordis
B.
Mesencephalon
C.
Midgut loop
D.
Pleuroperitoneal folds
E. Respiratory
diverticulum

. A woman 30 weeks into her first pregnancy, in which she has been diagnosed with maternal diabetes mellitus, was rushed to delivery because of signs of preeclampsia. After a cesarean section delivery, the newborn baby was noted
to have signs of cyanosis,
tachypnea and dyspnea. Hyaline membrane disease (surfactant deficiency) is suspected in the newborn. Which of the following is a characteristic of surfactant?

A. It consists primarily of sphingomyelin, not lecithin

B. It decreases compliance of small alveoli
C. It disrupts liquid intermolecular forces in alveoli
D. It increases the surface tension of alveoli
E. It is produced by type I pneumocytes in alveoli
F. It lines medium-sized bronchi, not alveoli
